Springfield City Council is asking business owners to not use coal tar as a sealant in their parking lots.
Any business not using coal tar will get a “clean water champion” sign out front for everyone to see.
The positive reinforcement comes after city leaders discussed how the sealant can be dangerous to the environment and people’s health.
The Springfield News-Leader reports city leaders decided in February to not punish people for using coal tar.
Other cities across the country have banned the tar.
Coal tar is usually cheaper than other options. One substitute is asphalt emulsion.
