City Asks Voters to Approve Tax for Public Servant Pension Fund

The pension fund for Springfield police and firefighters is in a precarious place as the city asks voters to continue to fund the plan for another ten years.

Springfield voted for a pension tax in 2009 for ten years and that tax amounted to around 3/4ths of a cent on all sales.

The money was set to go to Springfield and Fire department pensions.

The city says it didn’t get the return on investments that it had hoped.

Firefighters and police in the city pay into the pension system, and not Social Security.

If they don’t have a pension, most do not have a retirement.
