Former Officer Charged with Assault, Violating Protection Order

A former Springfield Police Officer is charged with assault and violating a protection order.

James Cooney has pleaded not guilty.

Court Documents say the victim told investigators it had happened multiple times. She said during one incident Cooney had headbutted her hard enough for her to black out. She said she woke up with her head in the sink and her mouth full of blood.

A judge granted her a restraining order. Cooney was ordered not to go within 500 feet of the victim or contact her.

The documents also say Cooney attempted to confront the victim at the Greene County Courthouse and used a GPS tracking device on her car.

He resigned from the SPD a day before the incident at the courthouse and the department has declined to comment.

Cooney is free on $1,000 bond.
