Dr. Robert Spence Passes Away After Stroke

Former Evangel University president Dr. Robert Spence has died.

He was 84.

A statement from Evangel President Carol Taylor says Spence passed away peacefully this morning after suffering a stroke this weekend.

Visitation is this Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. at the Robert H. Spence Chapel on the Evangel campus.

A public memorial service will follow at 3 p.m.

The memorial service will be livestreamed on Evangel’s website.

Here’s the statement from Evangel University President Carol Taylor:

It’s with profound sorrow that I share with you on behalf of the Spence family that Dr. Robert H. Spence, Evangel University’s third president, passed away peacefully this morning from the stroke he suffered this weekend.

He was surrounded by his family as he passed into the arms of our Lord and Savior.

A public memorial service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2020, at Evangel in the Robert H. Spence Chapel.

A visitation will be held between 1:30 and 2:45 p.m., and the service will be at 3 p.m.

The memorial service will be livestreamed on our website for people who are unable to travel.

The family has asked me to extend its gratitude to you for your love and support.

Please continue to keep the Spence family, and especially Dr. Spence’s beloved wife, Anne, in your prayers.

We have created a memorial page for Dr. Spence that will be updated with memorial comments that can be found at: www.evangel.edu/DrSpence.

If you wish to send cards to the family you may mail them to Evangel University Office of the President at 1111 N. Glenstone Ave., Springfield, MO 65802, and they will be delivered to the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions to the Robert H. Spence Evangel University Memorial Fund.

President Spence lived his life with great integrity and dignity in service of the King of Kings.

His service to Evangel and Springfield cannot be overstated.

I am reminded of the words of Jesus in Matthew 25, in which He says: “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!”

While we mourn his passing, let us also remember that he is now rejoicing with our Lord and Savior.
