SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (April 23, 2020) – At a time when many are trying to stay home as much as possible, the hunt for a new job is happening on the internet. That’s why Mercy is meeting candidates where they are.

This Friday, April 24, Mercy is hosting a virtual career fair for licensed practical nurses (LPNs). It runs from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Those who are interested can register online at bit.ly/LPNfair or look for the Facebook event on the Mercy Hospital Springfield page.

“We’ve actually had this technology since 2015,” said Laura Starks, vice president of Human Resources for Mercy Springfield Communities. “But we didn’t see a lot of interest when we first tried it. Now, with COVID-19 keeping people at home, this is becoming very popular among our candidates.”

Mercy reintroduced the virtual career fairs for non-provider positions in February and has hosted 15 events across its footprint since. More than 330 people have attended the virtual events, resulting in more than 50 interviews and 30 new hires so far.

Mercy has a team of recruiters who look for new doctors and advanced practice clinicians. They’re using the same technology and are also getting great results. The recruiters used to travel across the country to attend career fairs, but they’re finding virtual options are now a better option. “Attendance at those in-person fairs was 150 candidates, at the most,” said Tammy Hager, executive director of Mercy Talent Selection. “Now, we’re getting 250 or more on virtual fairs. Our talent scouts can chat with up to four candidates at a time, and as the selection process progresses, we’re also doing virtual interviews.”

While Mercy may eventually begin in-person job fairs again, it also plans to continue virtual options. “The virtual fairs cast a wider net,” Starks said. “There may be a candidate several states away who wants to relocate to the Ozarks, and this option makes it easy for us to connect with them.”
