To promote the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention’s recommended measure of wearing a mask in public, Springfield Mayor Ken McClure announces a contest that invites community members to submit videos on why it’s necessary to wear a mask, with the winning ad to be used as a public service announcement (PSA) submitted to air on Springfield television stations.

“Each one of us keeps the other safe — every person has a responsibility here, social responsibility. And that’s what wearing a mask is all about,” said Mayor Ken McClure. “The right thing to do is to wear a mask because it’s not about you, it’s about my health and the health of our essential workers. You wear a mask to protect me, I wear a mask to protect you.”

The videos, which have to be submitted by July 15, should be 30 seconds or less and include someone wearing a mask over their mouth and nose. The Springfield-Greene County Health Department and the City of Springfield’s Department Public Information & Civic Engagement will then pick the five finalists and put them online for people to vote on. The video with the highest amount of votes in the finals will be deemed the grand prize winner.

To submit a video, people should post it on social media and tag #MaskUp417 and the City’s social media (@cityofsgf on Twitter and Instagram, or Facebook).
