A bill set to come before the Missouri Senate in 2021 would reduce the penalty for knowingly exposing someone to HIV.

The felony class will be reduced from a B to a D, or an A to a C if the other person contracts the virus. HIV community advocates say the current law deters people from getting tested.

HIV community advocates say the current laws deter people from getting tested. They also say the proposed law doesn’t remove penalties from those who act recklessly or maliciously.
