(KTTS News) — Springfield City Council has agreed to rename the midfield terminal at the Springfield-Branson National Airport after U.S. Senator Roy Blunt in honor of his service to the state of Missouri.

The new name will be the Roy Blunt Terminal, but the airport will keep its name and call letters (SGF).

Senator Blunt helped secure federal funding to build the new terminal.

It opened in May 2009.

A public ceremony will be held next month.

The airport has received several federal grants to construct, maintain, or improve critical airfield infrastructure, including runways, taxiways, and apron areas, thanks to help from Senator Blunt.

Blunt served seven terms in the U.S. House and two terms in the U.S. Senate, after deciding not to run for a third term.
