(KTTS News) — A Greene County judge has found former Missouri State University instructor Edward Gutting not guilty of murder by reason of insanity.
He’ll be placed in the custody of the Missouri Department of Health.
Gutting was charged with first-degree murder for stabbing retired professor Marc Cooper to death in 2016 and wounding Cooper’s wife, Nancy.
Prosecutors told the judge that even though Gutting had schizophrenia, he knew what he was doing when he went to Cooper’s home with two knives.
Defense attorneys say Gutting was having a psychotic episode and didn’t understand what he did.
