(KTTS News) — Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey is asking a court to remove Iron County Sheriff Jeffery Burkett from office.

Burkett and three other men were arrested in March for attempted kidnapping and street gang activity.

Burkett has pleaded not guilty.

Bailey’s office argues that Burkett abused his power by encouraging other law enforcement officers to make illegal arrests and detentions.

Burkett is still in office.

But while the court is considering the case, he cannot act as sheriff in Iron County.
