(Springfield’s News Talk 104.1) – Residents in Jackson County, Missouri, have voted against the decision to extend the sales tax which would have financed the renovations at Arrowhead Stadium and the construction of a new downtown ballpark for the Kansas City Royals.

The majority of voters, over 58%, rejected the tax that would have replaced an existing 3/8-cent sales tax, which has been paying for the upkeep of Truman Sports Complex for more than 50 years.

Recently, both teams signed leases to stay in Jackson County, but they were contingent on the sales tax extension passing.

Chiefs President Mark Donovan had earlier warned that the team might leave Kansas City if Question 1 failed.

The current lease at the Truman Sports Complex will continue through Jan. 31, 2031.
