Springfield City Council provided money earlier this year for signage to point out landmarks on its new African American Heritage Trail.

The project was created by Missouri State University Sociology Professor Lyle Foster, who tells Missourinet that he set out on a mission to educate himself.

“I’ve always been fascinated, as someone who has moved to the Springfield community, understanding and appreciating the history in particular of African Americans in our city,” Foster says.

The plans call for signs to be placed near many of the more important locations on the trail in the inner-city area of Springfield

Foster says he hopes it’ll give visitors an insight into the vibrant 1930’s African American business district that included segregation-era hotels and restaurants.
